The holiday season is upon us and so is the end of the semester. Here are some great resources to help you finish the year strong!
NHD Debuted a New World War II Teaching & Learning Resource

On Veterans Day NHD premiered a new teaching resource to invigorate the teaching and learning of World War II in Northern Europe, www.ABMCeduation.org.

This resource, funded by the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC) and produced in collaboration with the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media (CHNM) offers21 new lesson plans to teach World War II in Northern Europe. Each lesson plan ties to the story of a World War II Fallen Hero who is buried in or memorialized at one of six cemeteries in Northern Europe.

Tech Talk - December 2015

Students use a variety of sources for their NHD projects, but there are many unusual, and unused, primary sources out there. On Tuesday, December 8, 2015, we will be asking archivists, "What's the most interesting thing in your collection - and how can it be used in an NHD project?" Join us live as we talk with archivists and education specialists from theNational ArchivesWhite House Historical Society, and the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame Museum.

Need some ideas on using new primary sources in your classroom? Current events tend to pique student interest. Last month we had a great webinar with the Library of Congress about immigration on November 19 (click here to see the highlights).

Are your students thinking about conducting interviews for their NHD 2016 projects? On Tuesday, November 10, NHD hosted a Google+ Hangout to dispel the myth that interviews are essential to a strong project. Missed it? No problem - we have it posted.

ABMCeducation.org is live!

New Free Resource Seeks to Invigorate World War II Teaching in the Classroom
ABMCeducation.org is live!
National History Day (NHD), the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC), and the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media at George Mason University are launching a new, free digital resource today in honor of Veterans Day: ABMCeducation.org. This website includes 21 lesson plans created by American teachers who took the trip of a lifetime this summer to discover the stories of World War II fallen heroes buried and memorialized overseas as part of the Understanding Sacrifice education program.

Participating teachers designed lesson plans specific to their teaching discipline. These lesson plans are hosted at ABMCeducation.org and are designed to increase students' understanding of sacrifices made in WWII.  Designed for middle school and high school classrooms, the lesson plans are multi-disciplinary and can be applied in history, as well as art, math, science and English classrooms.  Through the use of primary and secondary sources, videos, and hands-on activities, students are transported to the war front and home front. From role-playing difficult family decisions at home to designing new war memorials and exploring military tactics utilized in France, students will walk away with a vivid understanding of the high cost paid by all Americans during this war.
