All teachers who register and attend receive classroom materials and a certificate of professional development hours.   Learn More   Teaching World War II this spring? Check out ABMCeducation.org. This resource, funded by the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC) and produced in collaboration with the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media (CHNM) offers 21 new lesson plans to teach World War II in Northern Europe. Each lesson plan ties to the story of a World War II Fallen Hero who is buried in or memorialized at one of six  American cemeteries in Northern Europe.   Already planning for 2016-2017? Taking a Stand in History The 2016-2017 NHD theme is Taking a Stand in History. Look for new resources and the new theme book to debut at the National Contest in June! It will be posted at nhd.org/themebook.     NHDx gives students at the National Contest an opportunity to learn and explore the Washington, D.C. metro area! Partners include the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, the U.S. Institute of Peace, the White House Historical Association, and even the Washington Nationals baseball team. NHD Students will be exhibiting their work at the Smithsonian Museum of American History and meeting members of Congress on Capitol Hill.   Check out NHDx Do your students need some tips revising projects for regional or affiliate contests? Beveridge Family Teaching Prize The American Historical Association seeks nominations for the Beveridge Family Teaching Prize for distinguished K-12 history teaching. The 2016 prize will be awarded to a group that has demonstrated excellence and innovation in elementary, middle school, and secondary history teaching, including career contributions and specific initiatives. Nominations are due May 15. Click here for more information. Nancy Lyman Roelker Mentorship Award The American Historical Association seeks nominations for the Nancy Lyman Roelker Mentorship award, which honors teachers of history who taught, guided, and inspired their students in a way that changed their lives. The 2016 award will be given to a secondary school teacher who has exemplified mentorship by being forthright, supportive, constructively critical, and committed to the student as a person, regardless of age or career goals. Nominations are due May 15. Click here for more information.     Summer Institute Opportunity for Teachers Join the White House Historical Association, the Herbert Hoover Presidential Museum, the National Archives and Records Administration, the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, and National History Day for a four-day teacher institute that will evaluate the history of the White House and its occupants. Teachers will participate in interactive workshops, visit historic sites throughout Washington, D.C., and learn from experts in the field about White House history, presidential history, and the presidency of Herbert Hoover. Application Deadline - April 30, 2016   Apply Today!   As Superheroes, the NEH-supported PBS program demonstrates, comic books and graphic novels are such integral parts of our culture that they have taken over our language and our television and film history. They also mirror the vast changes in American society and values over eight decades. Yet this medium was not considered part of "serious" literature until the publication of Art Spiegelman's Maus (1991). The first graphic novel to win the Pulitzer Prize, Maus showed us that even one of the most terrible crimes of the past century could be handled in this format. For students, comic books and graphic novels are appealing resources that allow them to formulate and grasp new and challenging ideas and opinions while developing their creativity. For teachers, comic books and graphic novels offer new ways to engage students. They provide a chance to build literacy and critical thinking skills by helping students develop a deeper and more complex understanding of what they read.
