Google Hangout - Website (12/9) & Paper/Documentary (12/15)

It’s Google+ Hangout time!  Our first hangout is for website students and will happen Tuesday 12/9 at 7pm ET/4pm PT.  This hangout will feature Rebecca Federman, from the New York Public Library’s What’s on the Menu? project.  Anyone can register and post a question when they register at www.nhd.org/hangouts.htm.  We’ll be live-tweeting all of the hangouts and accepting questions on Twitter using #NHDHangouts.  Tuesday’s website hangout will feature Cheryl Caskey, NHD in Kentucky coordinator as well as classrooms from Kansas and Pennsylvania.

Next week we’ll be holding our Hangout on Monday 12/15 at 7pm ET/4pm PT.  This hangout is designed for paper students, but our expert actually writes for documentaries, so please encourage documentary students to tune in as well

For all hangouts, to watch them live (or after the fact), just go to www.nhd.org/hangouts.htm and press play.  It’s that simple.

Thanks- have a great week-
Lynne

Weebly Webinar - Nov. 18

On Tuesday 11/18 at 7pm ET / 4pm PT we are hosting one of our more popular webinars – it’s a how-to webinar to build Weebly websites.  It starts at the basics – how to register for a site for NHD, how to choose a layout… and then progresses to some of the more detailed aspects.  This is designed for students, but can be great for teachers, coordinators, or coaches who answer student questions.  Elaine Koontz and I will be on live to answer questions.

Please pass the attached flyer across your networks.  As always, all of our webinars are archived at www.nhd.org/webinars.htm within a day or so of the program.

Thanks!

FREE NHD Webinar: Using Primary Sources Effectively

NHD, the National Archives, and White House Historical Association present:

Using Primary Sources Effectively

Tuesday, October 7, 2014
3:00 PM PST (6:00 PM EST)

Register for the Webinar:

*Please note it is unclear to me if this is a webinar for teachers only or parents too.  In any case, by time I get an answer, it may be too late for you to register so I have included this registration information anyhow in hopes that this won't be a problem for parents to be a part of.  I clicked on the registration link and there is an option for "parent" so I believe it is safe to assume parents/students may register for this webinar.  If this is not the case, I deeply apologize.

Primary vs. Secondary Sources

For help with Primary vs. Secondary Sources, please See Page 7 of this document for more details...

This is the PDF document is the NATIONAL RULE BOOK (NHD 2015); the one your child will be given is the CA [STATE] RULE BOOK that we will use at the county level.  (The state level rulebook will be distributed soon...)

The national rulebook can be referred to, however, please do not abide by everything in the NATIONAL Rule Book as the STATE level guidelines are what we will adhere to for the COUNTY as well as the STATE competition [in the event that state and national rules conflict].

Library of Congress

Education Specialists from the Library of Congress are offering a free webinar to model primary source analysis strategies for educators and to discuss the impact this can have on instruction.

Discuss instructional strategies for helping your NHD students learn from visual images as they explore the rich collections of the Library of Congress. Primary sources are only fragments of history, sometimes ambiguous and contradictory, frequently raising questions about bias, purpose and point of view. Participants will explore ways to increase student engagement with visual images, although the model and thinking processes can be adapted to other topics and other primary sources.
